Doltone House Hyde Park: A Classy Audio System for a Classy Venue

Situated on level 3 of the Tattersalls Club, Doltone House Hyde Park is a new meeting and events venue boasting five metre high ceilings with an abundance of natural light via floor to ceiling spectacular windows and uninterrupted views of Sydney’s Hyde Park. The Hyde Park Ballroom is the main room which can be divided, via operable walls, into four smaller rooms, or any combination thereof, if required. The Manhattan and Avenue Rooms are smaller meeting spaces often used as pre-function rooms.

Fredon designed, supplied and installed all of the audio visual requirements for the venue working closely with inhouse AV company Microhire to design and develop a solution that would not only meet the needs of Doltone House’s banquet staff but also Microhire. When designing the system, Fredon took into account the venues main markets; weddings at the weekend and corporate events during the week. The wedding function mode required a fairly simple system that the banquet staff could operate whereas the corporate set up is where the AV system really comes to life.

“There are a total of eight HD projectors and screens in the venue each of which is flanked by JBL PRX412M speaker cabinets to provide front of house,” explained Nick Orsatti, General Manager at Fredon. “Added to that are forty-four JBL Control L47LP in ceiling speakers for background music typically used for weddings. There are also provisions for powered subwoofers if required with four of them on site. It can certainly kick along quite well!”

Microhire’s general manager Thomas Armati reports that the JBL PRX speakers have been very impressive. “We’ve installed them in two of our venues and they’ve been great,” he said. “The JBL Control 47LP’s are, to be honest, probably too good! They perform very well.”

For radio microphones, Nick specified Shure ULX-D Quad systems with a complete antennae distribution system feeding the venue. “I’m really stoked with the Shure ULX-D’s,” Nick said. “They’re a really simple system to use and you get heaps of channels which is important when there’s not much spectrum available. They’re a really nice package and I expect to see a lot more hire companies start using them. We’re putting heaps of them in everywhere.”

As audio flexibility was paramount, Fredon installed an extensive tieline network between stage positions and operator positions; all tielines are fed back into the main matrix. “They come up into a two 296-way Bantam patch bays and then are fed into the system DSP which is a Soundweb London network,” added Nick. “There are a total of twenty-eight inputs and thirty-two outputs from the four devices; two BLU-160 DSP’s and two BLU-120 I/O Extenders. That provides all system inputs from radio microphones, all of those tieline inputs, dedicated lectern inputs, all the video switching and so forth. It’s reasonably comprehensive yet flexible.”

The BSS Soundweb London’s supply Crown amplifiers with 4 channel Energy Star certified ComTech DriveCore 4150’s powering the ceiling system and Crown XTi 4002’s the front of house.

Forty-four Jands JLX Lite lighting bars were installed with each room having its own discreet set up, and they are all wired back from the traditional 240 volt circuits to Jands WM 72-way Wall Patches and Jands Wall Mount Dimmers.

“Again, it’s designed for maximum flexibility so they could run three shows concurrently via different DMX universes and so forth,” said Nick.
