Production & Technical Manager Full Time | St Kilda The National Theatre Melbourne
The National Theatre is seeking an experienced and hands‑on Production & Technical Manager to lead all technical, production and backstage operations across our historic St Kilda venues.
This is a key leadership role within a small, dedicated team, responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and professional delivery of technical, production and backstage operations across all performances, venue hires from our diverse range of presenters. Along with overseeing the maintenance and development of all technical systems.
About the Role
You will:

Lead technical operations across lighting, audio, AV, staging, rigging and fly systems

Maintain and develop venue technical systems, documentation and equipment inventories

Plan and deliver all productions, events and venue hires from a production & technical perspective

Interpret technical riders and provide practical, safe and creative solutions

Coordinate production schedules, staffing, rostering and resource allocation

Supervise and mentor casual technical staff

Ensure compliance with OH&S legislation, SWMS, risk assessments and safe work procedures

Build strong relationships with hirers, presenters, schools, contractors and suppliers

Manage technical budgets, maintenance and capital upgrades

Contribute to organisational planning and departmental collaboration
With a small core team, this is a hands on role. You’ll be actively involved in solving technical issues, supporting shows, and attending to venue and facilities matters as needed.
About You
You bring:

Demonstrated experience in technical and production management within a performing arts venue
-
Strong operational knowledge across lighting, audio, AV, rigging and staging
-
Experience with power loading, ETC Eos Nomad, counterweight fly systems and rigging scenery
-
Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and rostering casual crew
-
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
-
Confidence interpreting riders from a technical perspective and delivering complex productions.

Comprehensive understanding of theatre OH&S requirements

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
Desirable qualifications include Test & Tag, Working at Heights, rigging, and experience with Allen & Heath, Midas or Yamaha consoles.
