About the Role
Opera Australia is seeking an experienced, highly organised Stage Manager to support the smooth running of rehearsals and performance seasons.
This role works closely with the creative team, Technical Director and Production Manager to ensure productions are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest artistic standard. You will run the show, coordinate rehearsal logistics, support the Stage Management team and maintain production documentation throughout the season.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee bump-in and bump-out of all stage management and props elements.
- Prepare and communicate rehearsal requirements with the Technical Director.
- Create, update and maintain production documentation, including show plots and prompt scripts.
- Call productions when required and oversee teaching of calls within the Stage Management team.
- Monitor the physical and artistic integrity of the production, reporting and following up on any issues.
- Maintain technical and production standards set by the Technical Director and provide regular updates to the Technical Director and Production Manager on production developments.
- Roster staff with regard to fatigue management and minimising overtime.
- Attend production and staff meetings and action agreed outcomes.
- Undertake other duties, as required, to support the successful delivery of productions.
- Ensure all team members understand and comply with OA SAFE and all WHS policies and procedures.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and model safe working practices at all times.
About You

- 2+ years’ experience as a Stage Manager in theatre, opera, musical theatre or large-scale live performance.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage complex rehearsal and performance schedules.
- Demonstrated experience calling shows and maintaining prompt scripts and production paperwork.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with creatives, performers, technicians and production staff.
- Experience leading, mentoring or supervising stage management or production teams.
- Calm, professional and solutions-focused under pressure, with strong problem-solving skills.
- Sound understanding of WHS requirements in live performance and commitment to safe work practices.
- Experience in opera or large-scale performing arts environments is highly regarded.
