Position Overview
Casual Technicians play an essential role in the delivery of technical services across all events at The Pavilion. Working under the direction of the on-shift Stage Manager and in collaboration with the Technical Manager, Technicians are responsible for the setup, operation, and pack-down of staging, lighting, sound, and audiovisual systems. This hands-on role supports hirers and performers in achieving their vision by applying strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a customer-focused mindset. Technicians also contribute to the care, maintenance, and presentation of equipment and backstage areas, ensuring all activity meets safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Event & Rehearsal Support

Set up, operate, and pack down technical systems for rehearsals and performances across staging, lighting, sound, and AV disciplines.

Follow stage plans, cue lists, input lists, patch sheets, and other technical documentation accurately.

Support the Stage Manager and Technical Manager to deliver smooth, safe, and professional events.

Respond promptly to changes during live events and assist in resolving technical issues.

Communicate clearly with the Stage Manager and other team members to ensure seamless backstage operations.
Venue & Technical Operations

Ensure all technical equipment is used safely, stored correctly, and maintained in good working order.

Assist with preventative maintenance, system testing, and reporting on equipment condition using established procedures.

Help maintain clean and organised back-of-house spaces, including storage rooms, dressing rooms, and loading dock.

Contribute to the implementation of standard operating procedures and report any faults, damage, or safety concerns.

Support efficient bump-in and bump-out processes, following direction from the Stage Manager.
Safety, Compliance & Teamwork

Operate in accordance with all WHS protocols and The Pavilion’s safety procedures.

Work cooperatively as part of a diverse technical team, supporting colleagues to meet production timelines.

Uphold professional standards in presentation, conduct, and communication during every shift.

Contribute to a safe and respectful work environment by following instructions, reporting incidents, and assisting in emergency response as required.
Essential Requirements
-
Comprehensive skills and experience in one or more technical disciplines: Staging, Sound, Lighting, or AV.

Tertiary qualification or equivalent training in technical production or a relevant field.

Proficiency in setting up and operating relevant equipment and systems safely and efficiently.

Working knowledge of communication and signal transport systems, including intercoms, cue lights, paging systems, and IP networks.

Ability to interpret and follow technical documentation (e.g., cue lists, stage plans, patch sheets).

Physically fit and able to lift equipment and work at heights.

Flexible availability for ad hoc, rotating shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Commitment to upholding WHS policies and procedures.
-
Current Working with Children Check (for paid work).
Desirable Skills
-
Proficiency in both counterweight and automated fly systems.
-
Good working knowledge of lighting techniques including focusing, patching, and addressing fixtures.

Understanding of audio/visual concepts such as microphone placement, system tuning, projector setup and alignment, masking, and QLab programming.

Elevated Work Platform (EWP) (Yellow Card).

Construction White Card.
About The Pavilion
Opening its doors in late January 2023 after a $42M capital investment by Sutherland Shire Council, The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre is the premier performance venue in the south of Sydney. Built on the site of the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, the all-new Pavilion boasts a brand new 686-seat theatre, a full fly-tower, workshop spaces, a stunning new entry forecourt and foyer with enhanced accessibility, private entertaining areas and a terrace bar overlooking the adjacent Peace Park. The Pavilion presents a broad range of performing arts events across the year – comedy, musicals, theatre, music and family programming – both self-produced and by commercial and community hirers.
